This is not a science communications job but an internal communications one. I've noticed these cropping up in a few charities and possibly other sectors too. I've included it because of the comms side of thing but I'm not planning on including many jobs of this type as they're not really relevant to the blog, but I thought some might be interested in this sort of thing.

Larger organisations need to help staff know what their colleagues are up to and I suppose jobs like this are a bit like the organisational equivalent of a hormonal system - reporting / disseminating information beyond one team ;-)

Action on Hearing Loss
Internal Communications Advisor

Salary: £21,000 - £24,000 per annum, dependent on experience

Based: Featherstone Street, London, EC1Y 8SL

Interview dates: 21 - 25 May 2012

Action on Hearing Loss

Action on Hearing Loss is the new name for RNID. We are working for a world where hearing loss doesn’t limit or label people, where tinnitus is silenced and where people value and look after their hearing.

Roles and responsibilities

This is a brilliant opportunity for you to help make an important contribution to a national charity, helping make sure that all our people are informed, engaged and inspired. As a key member of our Internal Communications team, you’ll help keep everyone updated on the progress we’re making towards our vital objectives.

From writing and editing our intranet, emails and newsletter, to devising communications plans, co-ordinating internal surveys, researching news stories and managing internal events it’s a varied role. You’ll also provide administrative support, including organising meetings and minute taking.

Finally, we’ll look to you to act as our communications and brand expert, answering queries from across the organisation. A real champion for communications, you’ll work closely with other departments and teams to help them get their message across clearly, developing a network of contacts who can help you spread important messages and information.

Skills

You will need to be an experienced – and brilliant – copywriter, with the ability to adapt your style to suit your audience. You will also have strong editing and proofreading skills.

You’ve worked in a communications environment before, and have a strong understanding of the difference they can make within an organisation. Finally, you have the ability to build strong relationships with people at all levels, developing highly productive networks across the charity.

Does your organisation have a jobs vacancies page? Does it look like this? http://organisation.org.uk/about_us/work_for_us/current-vacancies.aspx? Might your web people be persuaded to point http://organisation.org.uk/jobs at it (no need to move the actual page) to make it a bit easier to find and bookmark?

Clinical Writing Competition

Fancy yourself as a clinical writer?

Do you have a passion for medicine and the ability to write clearly and concisely about it? Do you have strong views about a particular clinical area, which you would value the chance to express? Or are you keen to share your clinical experiences with your colleagues, as a means of stimulating discussion or debate?

If the answer to any of these questions is yet, enter our clinical writing competition – and you could win the new book by Pulse's new columnist, Dr Margaret McCartney. We have five copies of Dr McCartney's book – The Patient Paradox – to give away, to the GP writers who most successfully spear a controversy, sacrifice a sacred cow, or illuminate an area of general practice with their advice or experiences.

We're keen to give you the option of writing in any of a variety of formats, but as a guide, you might want to consider one of the following:

Clinical opinion – give your view on an area of clinical controversy (approximately 600 words)

A case study – detail your experiences with a challenging diagnosis or case, using either Pulse's Snapshot Diagnosis format (500-600 words) or The Information (1,000)

Ten top tips – your bitesize practical advice on an area of medicine (1,000 words)

See below for examples. [Edit: I've not copied the examples as that might be copyright but I don't feel too guilty about sharing job description text. See link above for the examps, Jo]

To enter our competition, email pulse@pulsetoday.co.uk by Monday 30 April and mark the subject line as ‘Clinical writing competition'.
